Music
At Methacton, we believe every child has music inside them — and our comprehensive music program helps bring that music to life!
From classroom music experiences in kindergarten through fourth grade to full ensemble performances of 3rd and 4th graders, we offer a dynamic curriculum that inspires creativity, builds confidence, and nurtures a lifelong love of music.
The Methacton elementary music program encourages our students by:
- valuing a life enriched by the arts
- embracing our strong tradition of musical excellence
- developing confidence and compassion through musical performance
- understanding their individual roles as contributors to the global community
While our ensembles are for 3rd and 4th graders, our music program is for everyone! All elementary school students attend music class once per 6-day cycle. Our music teachers nurture and encourage students’ musical skills starting in Kindergarten. Our elementary school music program includes the following components:
General Music
As early as Kindergarten, students learn to be tuneful, beatful and artful. Students demonstrate tunefulness through echo singing, singing simple songs and improvising short tunes. Students learn to be beatful by moving the body to the beat of music and playing small percussion instruments. Finally, students become artful by moving expressively to music.
Beginning in 2nd grade and continuing through 4th grade, students become musically literate by speaking, reading and writing music notation. As students become literate they can read and perform simple songs on Orff instruments.
Orff Instruments
Within music class, students learn music through movement, rhythm, speech, and instrument play. Using xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, drums, and more, children explore music in a hands-on, joyful environment that supports their musical and personal growth. Special thank you to the Methacton Education Foundation for their generous grant to our Orff program.
